How do I get off my daily Diet Coke?
Canyon Ranch supports any effort to reduce and/or eliminate the use of artificial sweeteners. While they have not absolutely been linked to a disease, we are concerned that we don’t have adequate data to make a definite health claim. Also, there is evidence that artificial sweeteners may interfere with our natural appetite control processes and increase the desire for sweets.
Here are two options:
1. Go “cold turkey” and eliminate them all at once. This could cause a caffeine withdrawal headache, if the product is caffeinated.
2. Gradually decrease the amount and/or frequency of artificial sweeteners to avoid the unpleasant side-effects of withdrawal, until you are not using the product any longer.
If you are missing the carbonation, perhaps sparkling water flavored with a small amount of juice may be appealing. There are also non-caloric flavored sparkling waters that do not have artificial sweeteners or flavoring agents.
